History of The Traveller's Rest
The pub was originally owned by Nelly & Michael O’Donovan from the early 1900s to 1984; who incidentally had a member of their family on the ill-fated Lusitania. The current owners Kathleen and Michal Kirby, have been running it since 1995. Kathleen’s family were publican’s and ran – Dublin’s renowned pub The Stag’s Head.
The inspiration for the park is to honour the late, Professor Gerry O’ Sullivan in Science and Medicine. He was a world renowned and preeminent Cancer Researcher and Surgeon; Immunotherapist and founder of the Cork Cancer Research Centre. The park holds open days of scientific and educational days throughout the year. Since 1999, the pub has been fund raising for Cork Cancer Research Centre and it is a big part of the Annual Threshing Festival. This is held the 2 nd Sunday of October.
